About Rajgir

Why visit Rajgir

Rajgir (Rajgriha, “home of kings”) was the first capital of the Magadh kingdom, long before Pataliputra. Five hills ring the town, and almost every one carries a story. Buddha spent many rainy seasons here and preached on Griddhakuta, the Vulture’s Peak. The first Buddhist Council met at the Saptaparni Caves after his passing. Mahavira, the 24th Jain Tirthankara, also lived and taught here, and the Mahabharata places King Jarasandha’s capital in Rajgir.

Today Rajgir is also Bihar’s favourite weekend escape. Ride the ropeway up to the white Peace Pagoda, walk the Glass Skywalk 250 feet above the valley, and bathe in the hot springs at Brahmakund. A tonga takes you to Ghora Katora lake, where vehicles aren’t allowed. Nalanda’s ancient university ruins are 15 minutes away, so most people pair the two.

Getting around, stay and food

Getting around

The sights are spread over about 10 km, so a car for the day is easiest. Autos and e-rickshaws are cheap for short hops; agree the fare first.
Ghora Katora lake is closed to motor vehicles: take a tonga, e-cart or hired cycle from the entry point. Book Nature Safari and Zoo Safari tickets online in advance.

Where to stay

One night in Rajgir makes the trip relaxed and lets you see the Peace Pagoda in morning light.

  • Bihar Tourism (BSTDC) hotelsNear the main sights · Value and location
  • Mid-range hotelsAround the Kund area and the main road · Families and groups
  • ResortsEdge of town, near the hills · Couples and weekend breaks
  • Dharamshalas and monasteriesNear the Jain and Buddhist sites · Pilgrims on a budget

Food to try

  • Litti chokha: Bihar's signature dish, sold at roadside stalls near the kunds.
  • Silao khaja: a flaky, layered sweet from Silao village, between Rajgir and Nalanda. Stop on the way.
  • Sattu sharbat: cooling roasted-gram drink, perfect on a hot afternoon.
  • Jain thali: simple vegetarian meals without onion or garlic, near the Jain temples.
  • Momos and thukpa: near the Buddhist sites, which draw visitors from Tibet, Japan and Thailand.

Travel tips

  • Book Nature Safari and Zoo Safari online a few days ahead; weekend slots sell out. Nature Safari is closed on Mondays.
  • Start early: most sights open by 8–9 AM, and the ropeway and safari close by mid-afternoon.
  • Wear good shoes. Griddhakuta, Saptaparni Caves and the Jain temples all need a climb.
  • Carry water, a cap and sunscreen from April to June.
  • Dress modestly at temples and monasteries, and remove shoes where asked.
  • The ropeway does not allow lighters, sharp objects or alcohol. Carry ID.
  • At the hot springs, keep valuables in the car and carry a towel and a change of clothes.
  • Use official counters and the official safari website only.
