About Rajgir
Rajgir (Rajgriha, “home of kings”) was the first capital of the Magadh kingdom, long before Pataliputra. Five hills ring the town, and almost every one carries a story. Buddha spent many rainy seasons here and preached on Griddhakuta, the Vulture’s Peak. The first Buddhist Council met at the Saptaparni Caves after his passing. Mahavira, the 24th Jain Tirthankara, also lived and taught here, and the Mahabharata places King Jarasandha’s capital in Rajgir.
Today Rajgir is also Bihar’s favourite weekend escape. Ride the ropeway up to the white Peace Pagoda, walk the Glass Skywalk 250 feet above the valley, and bathe in the hot springs at Brahmakund. A tonga takes you to Ghora Katora lake, where vehicles aren’t allowed. Nalanda’s ancient university ruins are 15 minutes away, so most people pair the two.
