About Valmiki Tiger Reserve
Valmiki Tiger Reserve covers about 900 sq km of sal forest, grassland and river at the northern tip of Bihar, where the state meets Nepal and Uttar Pradesh. It joins Nepal’s Chitwan National Park across the border, and is home to tigers, leopards, sloth bears, gaur, deer and more than 250 species of birds.
Valmiki Nagar, the gateway town, sits on the Gandak river. From here you go on jungle safaris, take a boat on the river, visit the Gandak barrage and walk to Valmiki Ashram, where the sage Valmiki is said to have written the Ramayana. Bihar’s eco-tourism cottages and jungle camps make it an easy nature break.
